Day 16 - Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park

We woke up really early to try our luck at catching the first ferry over to Port Townsend.  We were a little bummed when we found out you are supposed to have reservations.  They told us to show 90 minutes early.  Well, we got there 15 minutes early (the first ferry at 7:15), the guy told Ron to park in Lane 8 and they'd see what they could do.  I think we were the 3rd vehicle loaded!  So, the day is off really good!  It was a 30 minute boat ride over.  So pretty!  The ferry saved about 3 hours of driving through Seattle.

We pause to remember 9-11. Notice that flags are at half mast.  Olympic National Park is beautiful on the mountainous, wooded side where we are.  The rangers here are super friendly and very helpful!  We parked the camper at Heart of the Hills campground - nice, but cold and damp and you can't find a level site anywhere. Headed on up to Hurricane Ridge, so named for the hurricane force winds in the winter. How anything survives is amazing.  The trees are really bent from the wind.  Right now the weather is fairly good, but rain is predicted for tomorrow. The views at the top are simply spectacular!  Panoramic views.  Mount Olympus tends to stay in the clouds but I got a few pictures of him showing his head.  Mount Carrie and Carrie glacier are really pretty.  We went on the High Ridge Trail to get more views.  These high altitude trails really work our lungs!  Got great pictures where you overlook the Strait of Juan de Fuca - you can see over to Victoria, Canada, the Cascade Mountains, Mount Baker (volcano) and Bellingham, WA.  It's amazing!  Which reminds me, we keep getting Canadian radio stations and they really throw me off when they give a temperature of 19......
On the ferry to Pt. Townsend
You can see Canada from here. Strait of Juan de Fuca.
