Kanab is an awesome place. We really need to come back here and spend a few more days. Back in the Hollywood days of westerns, this was where it all happened. We decided to stop for a lunch break at Parry Lodge which is where all the movie stars of the 50s and 60s stayed. It was cool to look at all the autographed pictures on their walls. And lunch was pretty good too!
Next up is Kodachrome Basin State Park which is located between Bryce Canyon National Park and Capitol Reef National Park on Hwy. 12. This is a MUST SEE state park for anyone passing through. We actually have full hook ups which is great. I can do laundry and clean house! LOL! There are spectacular towering sandstone chimneys, changing color and shadow with the sun during the day. This is why the National Geographic Society in 1949, with consent from Kodak Film Corp., named the park Kodachrome. The red rock and semi-desert climate here make this park so attractive.

The one hike we did this afternoon was to Shakespeare Arch, which is the only arch found here in the park. Spectacular scenery!

Enjoyed cooking a great meal, playing Farkle, sitting by a fire, and taking a long shower (we were 3 days where we were into water rationing). Makes for a great evening and a great campsite.
Sunday morning we got up and walked around the park's really cool Nature Trail. An easy walk with a lot of information and great pictures. We then hiked Angel's Palace Trail. There are redrock hoodoos and unsurpassed views here. It is close to the campground so is pretty popular. This trail requires a lot of climbing and scampering in some places.

We left the park on continued on down Hwy. 12. Now this is one of the most beautiful and scenic drives we have been on! However, there are many 8%, 10%, 11% and 12% grades. So glad the big black "beast" can handle really well pulling our 5th wheel. There were times when we were driving along the ridge on top of the mountain and literally you were looking down into the valley on both sides and there wasn't a shoulder. Needless to say, I figured out why they call this area the Grand Staircase. But there was no way I was going to ask Ron to stop long enough for me to snag a few pictures for illustration. I tried through the window but they just didn't capture that "pucker factor" we were both feeling. Guess you'll have to use your imagination!
We arrived at our new home base, Capitol Reef National Park. It is so beautiful that words just don't properly explain it. We had to stay our first night dry camped as one of the hosts that were leaving were still in our site. It was rather warm, but the nice thing was that our new Camp Host neighbor made us dinner. Stay tuned for some pictures showing our view from our front porch! We don't have good internet here so doing blog work is more challenging.
