Day 5 - April 26, 2012 - Joshua Tree National Park

How often do you get to stay in a desert and enjoy rain storms all night?  A cold front has blown through.  Made coffee and went on a mile hike to Cottonwood Springs.  All kinds of beautiful and colorful cactus blooms.

Ron is cooking breakfast and then we’ll drive through the park.  Forgot to mention, but this week is National Park Week – so through Sunday, it isn’t costing us anything in entrance fees.

We did a few hikes.  A fun one was the “Hidden Valley” which is a box canyon where cattle rustlers used to hide their illegal stock.

The Joshua Tree is a member of the Agave Family and is found in the Mojave desert.  The Mormon’s named the tree after the Biblical “Joshua” as their sign to be guided westward.

We spent the night in Bakersfield, CA.  Horrible winds driving over.  Thought about our nephew Stephen who will soon be stationed at Edwards Air Force Base as a test pilot.

Geez…..hope they are prepared for the winds here!  The good thing – Ron took me out for birthday dinner!  Yummmm and an excellent cookie cake and ice cream!
